If you have friends who live in shared houses or flat-shares, they often prefer to receive individual invitations, though this is a matter of personal preference and is always worth checking if you are unsure.

Once you have this number, you will likely find that your order volume drops by thirty or forty per cent. This instantly frees up your budget for more premium details like wax seals, silk ribbons, or higher-quality cardstock.

The Golden Buffer: Always Order Extras

While you want to avoid over-ordering, there is one scenario where you should absolutely order more than your final headcount. I call this the Golden Buffer.

We always recommend ordering five to ten extra suites over and above your household count. You will certainly want a pristine, un-mailed suite to frame or place in your wedding album as a keepsake. Furthermore, on the morning of your wedding, your photographer will want to capture flat-lay photos of your stationery, which requires a perfectly clean invitation set to style alongside your rings and flowers. It is also almost inevitable that someone will be forgotten or that a guest’s plus-one will be confirmed at the eleventh hour. Finally, occasionally an invitation is lost in the post or arrives damaged, so having a spare on hand prevents a minor panic.

Why Small Reprints Are Costly

A frequent question we hear is whether you can simply order a few more invitations later down the line if you happen to run out. While we are always more than happy to print extra pieces for you, it is worth noting that we, alongside almost all professional stationers, have a strict minimum order quantity of thirty prints across both our semi-custom collections and bespoke suites.

Because of the intricate setup required for custom printing machinery, ink mixing, and paper cutting, print workshops cannot run single-digit jobs.

If you find yourself short by just five invitations next month, you would still need to place a new order for thirty suites to get those extra pieces. To avoid having to meet the industry minimum order requirement a second time, it is much more cost-effective to secure a generous buffer within your initial order. This ensures you have exactly what you need without paying for excess invitations you do not require.

Final Advice for Your Order

Before you place your final order, take a moment to organise your guest list in a spreadsheet. Mark clearly who is a single and who is a couple, and then add your five to ten-suite buffer to that total.
